Doctor Excuses

Alright, so in the case of schools, it is true that schools do get a certain amount of funding per student, per day and, if the student is not in attendance, and is truly sick, the school can still get their funding for that student if it is proven that the student was out due to illness.  So we suppose in this case, a doctor’s excuse for school can come in handy and be a means to support our schools.

However, for employers to require doctor’s excuses for work seems to indicate a lack of trust in their employees.  There is something fundamentally wrong with an employer requiring doctor’s excuses for work, especially if the employer has a sick day policy in place and in writing.  If an employee has sick time to draw upon, then employers should not require anything more than the employee to fill out a standard sick time form in order to have the day deducted from their bank of sick time accrued.  Yet many employers still require written proof that the employee was truly sick.  This causes employees—while sick—to have to:

  1. make an emergency appointment with their physician
  2. drive all the way to the medical offices (sometime sin bad weather or bad traffic)
  3. wait in the doctors waiting room (while spreading whatever 24 hour germ they may have)
  4. get escorted to the exam room
  5. wait some more while in the exam room
  6. speak with a nurse describing what symptoms you are experiencing
  7. wait some more once the nurse leaves
  8. finally see a certified doctor, whom, after explaining your symptoms all over again, simply confirms that you are indeed sick
  9. wait for the doctor to go and write out a little note (doctor’s excuses) for you that you can then present to your employer
  10. drive all the way home (in bad weather or perhaps bad traffic)
  11. then crawl back into bed for some real recovery time

All of this just to proof to your employer that you were indeed sick.  In many cases, the employees would have been better to stay in bed and mend rather than chasing down pieces of paper known as doctor’s excuses.  Then, employers have the nerve to rant about the rising cost of health insurance!

There are so many scams on the Internet these days to obtain false doctors excuses for work, it doesn’t really seem feasible for employers and schools to require them any more.  We recently visited a number of web sites that profess to provide doctor’s excuses primarily aimed at employees.  These were all ‘fake’ doctor’s excuses for school that an employee could purchase and download to show to their employers.  Doesn’t this further exacerbate the entire trust factor between employer and employee?
